Rhinoplasty

Surgeon-evaluating-patient-for-rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that alters the shape, size, or proportions of the nose to improve its appearance and function. It can address various concerns such as nasal asymmetry, a bump on the bridge, a drooping or bulbous tip, and nostril size and shape. Additionally, rhinoplasty can correct structural issues that impair breathing, such as a deviated septum. The surgery can be performed for cosmetic reasons, functional reasons, or a combination of both. The goal is to create a natural-looking nose that complements the other facial features and enhances overall facial harmony.

    Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty offers several benefits, including improved facial harmony by refining the shape and size of the nose to better fit the face. It can enhance self-confidence by addressing aesthetic concerns such as bumps, asymmetry, or an undesirable nasal tip. Functionally, rhinoplasty can correct breathing problems caused by structural issues like a deviated septum, leading to improved airflow and overall nasal function. The procedure provides long-lasting results, contributing to a more balanced and attractive facial appearance, while also potentially improving the patient’s quality of life through better nasal breathing.

    How Rhinoplasty Is Done

Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The surgeon makes incisions either inside the nose or between the nostrils, at the base of the nose. Through these incisions, the surgeon can reshape the bone and cartilage. Bone may be fractured or shaved down to reduce size, and cartilage may be removed, reshaped, or added to achieve the desired contour. Once the modifications are complete, the skin and tissue are redraped over the new nasal structure, and the incisions are closed.

    Who Rhinoplasty Is For

Rhinoplasty is suitable for individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their nose or who have functional issues such as breathing difficulties. Ideal candidates include those with nasal asymmetry, a prominent bump on the bridge, a drooping or bulbous nasal tip, or nostrils that are too wide or narrow. Candidates should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and be at least 16 years old, as the nose should be fully developed before undergoing surgery. Rhinoplasty can benefit those seeking cosmetic enhancement, functional improvement, or both, and a consultation with a skilled surgeon is essential to determine suitability.

    Surgical Process

You may be a candidate for nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) if you have a nose that is cosmetically unattractive or does not “fit” with other facial features. Rhinoplasty may also be indicated for an abnormal appearance of the nose as a result of birth defects, injury, or disease. Nose reshaping is intended to produce a more attractive nasal shape and/or a nose in better proportion to other facial features. Rhinoplasty is done on an outpatient basis under sedation, and local or general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will decide which of the following techniques should be used:

OPEN RHINOPLASTY: The most common technique performed for rhinoplasty is an Open Rhinoplasty. An external incision is made across the columella (strut between the nostrils). The nasal skin is elevated exposing the underlying structures. Bones, cartilage, and soft tissues are reshaped under direct vision.

TIP-PLASTY: If only the nasal tip is abnormal, it may be corrected without changing the nasal dorsum. Large nostrils may be reduced through tiny incisions at the outer base of the nostrils.
