New York Times takes another look at breast reconstruction

On the heels of Angelina Jolie’s announcement that she has undergone bilateral prophylactic mastectomies and implant reconstruction, The New York Times presented another side of the story today, with an overview of breast reconstruction, including descriptions of various techniques, and discussion of potential complications.

“[Jolie’s] disclosure was lauded by some advocates as a bold move that will inspire women to be proactive, learn about their family histories and risks, and consider genetic testing.

At the same time, some breast surgeons are discomfited that some might infer from the article that reconstructive surgery is a quick and easy procedure, and worry that Ms. Jolie inadvertently may have understated the risks and potential complications.”

FDA approves new silicone gel-filled breast implant

Dr. Kind and Dr. Chang are now certified to use the newest silicone gel implants made by Allergan.  The Natrelle 410 implants have been referred to as “gummy bear” implants because of they contain a highly cohesive silicone gel.  These shaped implants have a more natural contour and can be used for either augmentation or reconstruction.  Not everyone, however,  is a candidate for these implants .   It is important to discuss this with your doctor.
