Nipple-sparing mastectomy is option for BRCA carriers

While nipple-sparing mastectomies are feasible in BRCA carriers and select breast cancer patients,  not all patients will be a good candidate for this approach.  It is important to get all the information from your plastic surgeon about the pros and cons.  Dr. Kind and Dr. Chang have extensive experience reconstructing breasts following nipple-sparing mastectomies.  They will give you the information you need to make the best decision.

Training Doctors in Chile

santiagoDr. Kind travels this week to Santiago, Chile to help introduce SERIscaffold, a new product used in breast surgery, to South American plastic surgeons. Dr. Kind was invited by Allergan, Inc., to present his experience with this new implant. The meeting will include presentations and demonstrations in the lab and the operating room. Already FDA approved, SERIscaffold appears to offer many advantages to patients who require soft-tissue support in both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

New York Times takes another look at breast reconstruction

On the heels of Angelina Jolie’s announcement that she has undergone bilateral prophylactic mastectomies and implant reconstruction, The New York Times presented another side of the story today, with an overview of breast reconstruction, including descriptions of various techniques, and discussion of potential complications.

“[Jolie’s] disclosure was lauded by some advocates as a bold move that will inspire women to be proactive, learn about their family histories and risks, and consider genetic testing.

At the same time, some breast surgeons are discomfited that some might infer from the article that reconstructive surgery is a quick and easy procedure, and worry that Ms. Jolie inadvertently may have understated the risks and potential complications.”
