DIEP flap offers a natural breast reconstruction without implants.

This recent piece by ABC News highlights some of the advantages of using your own tissue for breast reconstruction after mastectomy.  Dr. Chang and Dr. Kind perform approximately 100 of these procedures each year.  The procedure can be performed immediately at the time of a mastectomy or after a mastectomy has been done.  Most patients are a candidate for this operation.  Call our office to schedule a detailed consultation.

Physical therapy after breast cancer surgery

Patients often ask what exercises they can do after their breast cancer surgery (mastectomy and reconstruction). A patient of ours recently told me about this website, http://breastcancerrehabilitation.com. Most patients should begin these exercises and stretches at some point following surgery. Be sure to ask Dr. Chang or Dr. Kind when it would be safe to begin. Physical therapy can also be a big help for patients to regain the range of motion and strength that can be lost during the recovery period.

While nipple-sparing mastectomies are feasible in BRCA carriers and select breast cancer patients,  not all patients will be a good candidate for this approach.  It is important to get all the information from your plastic surgeon about the pros and cons.  Dr. Kind and Dr. Chang have extensive experience reconstructing breasts following nipple-sparing mastectomies.  They will give you the information you need to make the best decision.
